Outside FurnitureA fire pit is a great way to make your patio a cozy place to gather all year round. They give you a warm place to gather on those chilly nights, and can add extra ambiance to your yard or patio. Many fire pits are a stand-alone option. And for some people, this may be fine, but if you want your fire pit to coordinate well with your existing furniture, or if you want to make your fire pit the centerpiece of your outdoor entertaining area, you may want to consider a fire pit set, instead of a stand-alone fire pit.

Fire pit sets are a combination of fire pits with matching seating. In some cases these sets are more like dining tables with a fire pit in the middle. Others are a traditional fire pit, or coffee table style fire pit with matching chairs, couches or loungers. These sets really are a nice addition to your outdoor entertaining space, and can tie together a number of seating areas, if you plan ahead.

In this review, we’ll offer our favorite patio fire pit sets, and give you a helpful buying guide to help you decide which sets are best for your needs.

This set comes with one of the best warranties we’ve seen, and the construction is really sturdy. This set will fit well in most patio décor, and the neutral colored cushions will coordinate well with other colors in your patio.

This set was a bit uncomfortable on the back, so you may want to purchase some pillows for the back of the chairs.

    Hashtag Home Camarena

    Pros:

If you’re working with a small space, but still want the ambiance of a fire pit, then you’ll want to look at the Camarena three-piece fire pit set. This set features aluminum construction, with an attractive pattern. The fire pit is very compact, and features the same patterned aluminum.

We weren’t in love with the lack of cushions. The seats are a bit hard, and with the patterned metal, not super comfortable. Standard sized patio cushions will fit these chairs, but it’s a bummer that they have to be bought separate.

Besides the lack of cushions, this is a great set for the price, and will look great on any small patio or deck.

This is a great set if you want something different. This sectional couch set with tiled fire pit is a great pick if you have plenty of space, and want something more relaxed than a set of chairs.

We love the wicker construction of this sectional couch. The arms feature cup holders, which is great, since wicker can be a bit unstable. The fire pit is propane fueled, and the tank fits easily in the base. Oh, and the cushions for this set come in a variety of colors, so you can pick the one that best fits your décor.

Our complaints, you can’t convert this set to natural gas, and it only comes with seat cushions. Throws will have to be purchased separately.

A fire pit set can make your backyard a bit cozier, and will allow you to use your patio for more of the year. Our favorite patio fire pit set, the Laguna Patio five piece set with swivel rockers, is an affordable option that you’ll find to be comfortable to sit in, easy to put together, and it will look great in your backyard.

In this review we’ve given you a variety of options for fire pit sets, all are great options for any budget and any backyard décor.

How to Choose the Best Patio Fire Pit Set

    Durability

This is really important, and you should look closely at other customer reviews about how well the fire pit set you want, stands up to time, the weather and heavy use. Look for products that are rated well for construction, and are made from quality materials. Also, make sure the upholstery is made for the outdoors. We’ve found some sets look great, and the fabric should be weather resistant, but when we actually get our hands on it, it’s thin, stains easily and just doesn’t hold up. Do take some time to read about the care and maintenance before you buy as well. This will increase durability and longevity of your fire pit set.

    Material

As we mentioned above, quality materials really do make the difference in how well your fire pit will stand up to the elements. This is especially important if you intend to leave your fire pit and seating outside year-round. You’re making a big investment with one of these sets, so you’ll want it to last as long as possible, before you need to replace it.

As far as fire pit materials go, look for stainless steel, coated cast aluminum, concrete and stone. These products are a good base for your fire pit, and they generally are made to handle the elements. We really like stainless steel and stone, though they are a bit expensive and heavy. Coated cast aluminum is lighter weight and more affordable, or look for copper and bronze for other light weight, fire pit materials.

When it comes to your seating, make sure that cushions are weather resistant and are made for outdoor use. Coated cast aluminum is a good frame material for seating, or go with a wicker for a more sophisticated look. Wicker is generally more expensive, but you can find some great fire pit sets with wicker couches and loungers that are a fun alternative to a dining table set.

    Size

Do make sure that you properly measure the space where your fire pit set is going to be placed. Make sure that the set you select will comfortably fit in that space, and allow for plenty of room to walk between pieces. Another good gauge of how big your fire pit set should be is how many people you will have sitting around the fire. If you are regularly entertaining large groups, a set with more pieces will be better for your needs. Smaller sets with fewer pieces are good for small patios.

Beyond these basic guidelines, when it comes to size and style, your personal preference is really the guiding factor. Look for sets that fit your space both in size and décor. You’ll also want to consider the shape and size of the fire pit itself. You may want a long, skinny fire pit to fit in a narrow space, or if you want a longer dining table. Smaller, square and round fire pits are great for gathering close for conversation.

Types of Fire Pits for Patio Sets

You have some options for the type of fuel used in your fire pit set. There are a few options, and you should know the pros and cons of each, before you run out and buy. You should also consider whether the fuel type requires you to pull a building permit or is allowed in your city municipal code or HOA covenants.

    Propane Gas Fire Pits

Besides wood and woodpile the propane fire pits are probably the most accessible, easy to use, and reliable fire pit fuel. Propane fire pits great an attractive flame and plenty of heat, and come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and types. Propane fire pits also come with a variety of fill materials that include rocks and stones, some tile and even glass. We like this fuel because it is easy to use, and with an apparent odor, it’s easy to know if your tank or fire pit has sprung a leak.

The downfall of propane, the tank. You’ll have to find a place to store the tank. Look for fire pits that have enough space underneath to store your propane tank. Otherwise, you’re going to have an eyesore on your patio, every time you run your fire pit.

    Gel Fuel Fire Pits

Gel fuel is a great option if you want a fire pit in a very small space. Think apartment, condo or townhouse patios. There are two gel fuel options, synthetic or ethanol based gels. Both are great, and both burn clean and without smoke or odors. Ethanol based fuels are considered a biofuel, and are better for the environment. A byproduct of corn processing, this gel is inexpensive, burns clean and produces a decent amount of heat. If you think you’re unfamiliar with this fuel type, it is the same fuel that is used to keep food warm at potlucks and parties.

The cool thing about gel fuel fire pits is that thanks to their small size and clean burning, these fire pits can move from your backyard to your living room without a problem. If you want to keep using your fire pit in the winter, this is a great solution.

The cons of gel fuel fire pits is that they just don’t make a ton of heat. If you really want to warm up a space, this isn’t your best bet. But they do look nice on your table. Gel fuel, especially ethanol based gel fuel can be pricey, so if you use it a lot, be prepared for the cost.

    Natural Gas Fire Pits

Our last option for fire pit fuel is natural gas. Many propane fire pits can be converted to natural gas, and many even come with a converter kit. Of all of the fuel options, this is the most reliable, and easiest to use. However, be aware that you will need to have a dedicated natural gas line for your fire pit, for this to work. If you don’t have one already available, you will need to have a gas line plumber come out and install a line for you. This may also require that you pull building permits, check with your city’s building code before you jump in.
