Our Top Choice...
Side by side refrigerators are rapidly becoming the most common kind, with good reason. As opposed to traditional top mounted freezers (which often have issues keeping things satisfactorily cold) or bottom freezers, which have issues with capacity in most cases, side by side refrigerators boast freezers with high performance as well as added space; great for people who need just as much room to store frozen foods as ones that need refrigerating.
Below I’ve gathered a list of the best ones I can find, along with a quick buying guide to help you narrow down what you might need.

9 Best Side by Side Refrigerators (2020 Reviews)
This is an excellent middle of the road option, with a good design and a fair amount of space, at a pretty reasonable price.
The burnished steel exterior looks good in almost any kitchen appointment, and is easy to clean. The handles are comfortable and pull easily, though are a bit crowded from certain angles.
The water and ice dispenser is spacious and easy to use, with a muted color tone that helps it blend into the fridge itself.
The interior is a spacious total 22.6 cu. ft., evenly split to each side, providing a good amount of overall usable space. The overall depth is small, meaning it fits in the depth of most counters, while having a bit of extra height to compensate for the relative shallowness.
Unfortunately there’s not too much else to say. It’s a well made refrigerator, but nothing truly stands out about it.
Looks nice in almost any kitchen
Well made and sturdy
Included ice maker and water dispenser
Very average for a side by side fridge
Handles feel a bit crowded to pull on
2. Runner up - KITMA Two Section Solid Door Reach In Refrigerator
This enormous commercial refrigerator and freezer isn’t for everyone, but makes an excellent buy if you’re looking to expand into any light or moderate commercial endeavor.
It could, I suppose, also be used as a home refrigerator as some kind of backup or bulk storage unit, prepping for emergencies and the like, but it’s most at home in a restaurant setting.
To that end it has quite a bit of space, a 44.7 cu. ft. interior (split between the two sides), and great adjustable shelves that can be removed and rearranged as needed.
The rolling casters on the bottom move smoothly, and it’s easy to reposition this fridge wherever you need it to be; which is great, given it weighs nearly 450 lbs. empty.
The 1/3 horsepower compressor is great, taking the freezer side all the way down to 0 degrees Fahrenheit; perfect for deep freezing and long term storage. The construction of the exterior is likewise solid stainless steel, with a great airtight seal.
This fridge is built to last and has high performance, so the only things potentially holding you back are the price (very high for a home fridge, but quite low for a commercial expense) and size.
Huge interior capacity
Great rolling wheels
Highly durable stainless steel design
High performance compressor
Takes up a lot of space
A bit expensive for a home model, so best used as a commercial fridge in most cases
3. Best Compact Side by Side Refrigerator - Avanti Side by Side Refrigerator and Freezer
If you’re looking for a compact side by side refrigerator, this is pretty much the only pick out there.
It performs well and is solidly made overall. The capacity as you might figure is low, especially split between a refrigerator and freezer side, but it’s still perfect for a wide variety of uses.
It makes a great refrigerator and freezer for a break room, guest room, motel room if you run something like that, and anything else where having a tiny fridge and freezer combo available is helpful.
It makes a great little cocktail bar as well, keeping a few beers cold, your liquor in the freezer side, and all your cocktail mixers kept chilled in the fridge portion.
Don’t sell this refrigerator short just because it’s small: it offers a lot of versatility at a great price. Just don’t expect it to be your primary fridge, unless you’re in a dorm or something and don’t have the space for anything bigger.
Compact and easy to move around
Highly versatile in potential usage scenarios
Good performance for the size
Fairly inexpensive compared to other side by side refrigerators
Doubles as a decent shelf or table depending on placement
Very limited capacity
4. Best Side by Side Beverage Refrigerator - Edgestar 48 inch Side by Side Beverage Center
Rather than a freezer and refrigerator combo, this side by side fridge is two fridges, one specialized in wine cooling.
This is the perfect wine connoisseur’s fridge, with an excellent wine racking system on the right side that is great for collectors. It holds up to 46 bottles and can be adjusted to the perfect wine temperatures: between 41 and 64 degrees Fahrenheit. This gives you a full range for any kind of wine (some wines prefer warmer or cooler temperatures than others).
The other side is a 142 can beverage refrigerator, together making this the top entertaining fridge out there. It can hold cans and small bottles of pretty much anything you and your friends might care to drink, allowing you to maintain a wide selection of beverages for direct consumption or cocktails. In terms of stocking your home bar, this fridge can’t be beat.
Even the price isn’t that bad, especially for a wine fridge of this size, giving you a lot of value for the price point. It’s not low priced by any means, but less expensive than you might expect if you know generally how high wine refrigerators tend to run.
The perfect entertaining fridge for stocking up on cocktail supplies and a wine collection.
Independently adjustable temperature ranges between the two sides.
Fair price for what you get
A bit bulky and heavy
Not a traditional fridge and freezer combo, which may throw some people off
5. Best Side by Side Wine Refrigerator - Kalamera Wine Cooler
This wine refrigerator comes in two sections, each individually adjustable between 40 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit. This makes it perfect for storing any kind of wine, from whites to reds and more specific brands of wine. The interface is very simple to understand and adjust, with a digital readout and simple button presses for any needed adjustments.
The beech wood shelves are very nice, and perfectly cradle your wine bottles, so long as they’re a standard sized Bordeaux bottle. Each of the 14 shelves holds up to 3 bottles of wine for a total of 42, unless some of them are oversized.
The overall construction is good, steel with solid wood shelves and a quality glass in the door. Keep in mind this glass isn’t opaque, so the fridge should be kept somewhere safe from direct sunlight.
Even the price is reasonable, helping alleviate the sticker shock that a larger wine cooler might bring on.
Easy to use
Great controls and easy to read display
Adjustable temperature on both sides for high versatility
Beautiful beech wood shelving
Not suitable as a normal fridge or freezer
6. Best Side by Side Compact Beverage Refrigerator - Phiestina Wine and Beverage Refrigerator
Much like the Edge Star beverage fridge above, this is made to hold wine in one side and cans in the other. This makes it a great beverage center that adds a lot to your entertaining room, “man cave”, home bar, or any other similar specialized room.
It’s also a lot more compact than the Edge Star option, which means it fits better in most average sized homes and entertaining rooms. The capacity is still good though: 20 bottles and up to 78 cans, which give you more than enough capacity to stock up and store a variety of drinks for any purpose, keeping your mixers, sodas, and beer in a single unified location for different guests or your own tastes.
Construction is good, and overall everything about this beverage fridge is nice. It’s just a bit small comparatively.
Great beverage capacity for the size
Excellent compact sizing
Independent temperature controls between the wine bottle and canned beverage sides
Sturdy steel construction
Does not function as a normal side by side refrigerator and freezer
Glass is not opaque for wine protection
Steel shelving is a bit harsh for glass bottles
7. Best Commercial Side by Side Refrigerator - Arctic Air Two Section Commercial Refrigerator and Freezer
This is a nice, trim commercial fridge and freezer. While it has a large interior capacity, it fits excellently into even relatively small spaces, with no overhang to worry about. It’s great as a free floating fridge, and can be easily repositioned wherever it needs to go. This makes it good as part of a “fleet” of similar refrigerators that might need to be moved around a bunch to clean under, stored out of the way, or rearranged as needed.
The shelves are arrangeable and give you a lot of space to store pretty much anything, including oversized foods that might otherwise be difficult to fit into a refrigerator like this.
The performance is excellent, with a good interior digital thermostat that makes it easy to adjust and read the interior temperature whenever you need to. The doors seal well, and are self closing unless set to 90 degrees (where they click to stay open for a while), and can be locked and latched to keep people out. It’s a bit expensive, but reasonable for a commercial fridge and freezer.
Easily rolls for re-positioning
Huge interior capacity
Sturdy and well made
Doors are self closing but can lock position
A bit pricey
8. Best Budget Commercial Side by Side Refrigerator - Koolmore Reach In Refrigerator and Freezer
This represents a somewhat cheaper option than the other commercial fridges on this list. While still pricey, you’re saving somewhere on the order of $400 to $500 on the average, which is a great deal if your budget is tight and you’re just starting out.
It lacks some of the quality of life features you might expect from the Arctic Air model above, and similar mid to high end commercial fridges. It lacks a digital temperature controller for one, relying in a more manual setting. But all the basic features are still here.
The doors are self closing, which is always nice to see on these kinds of refrigerators, and lock as well. The temperature can be adjusted as low as -8 degrees Fahrenheit, making it a great deep freezer. The casters are pretty good, though can get a bit sticky at times.
There’s nothing particularly unique or impressive about this model as a commercial fridge and freezer option, but neither is there any glaring flaw in it either. If you’re looking for a great freezer for your restaurant or other professional endeavor, but are on a budget, this Koolmore model is a great pick.
Good temperature range
Well made and sturdy
Great price for a commercial fridge and freezer
Lacks some quality of life features more expensive models have
9. Best Large Home Side by Side Refrigerator - Frigidaire Professional Stainless Steel Refrigerator and Freezer Combo
All the convenience of a professional style fridge and freezer, but in a package potentially small enough to fit in your home.
Frigidaire FPFU19F8RF is an excellent blend of commercial sensibilities and residential sizing. While quite large compared to a normal refrigerator, it’s not so large as to be unfeasible for use, though if placed in your kitchen (rather than some dedicated side room or garage or some such) would certainly need to be built around.
The interior is as spacious as you’d expect, with an even split of 19 cu. ft. apiece in the fridge (right) and freezer (left) sides.
It’s perfect for the aspiring chef or serious foodie that needs a lot of space to store ingredients, leftovers, and other things.
The interior is also well arranged, with a lot shelving and drawers to properly organize and store your food with ease.
The main rub is the price. I definitely wouldn’t recommend this fridge to someone who doesn’t have a serious need for this much food storage, whether that be for use at home or in a restaurant setting. For the latter, it makes a quite reasonable business expense, but for the former is a much harder sell.
Enormous interior dimensions
Very organized interior
Great for heavy home use or light commercial use
Exceptionally pricey if viewed as a home purchase
I like all of these refrigerators for different reasons. I put the Frigidaire model up top because I thought it was the best representative for what an average person might want as their home refrigerator and freezer, and is indicative of what those refrigerators are like; functionally identical to each other save for difference in size.
The rest are more specialized units, be they miniature models, commercial ones, or the beverage fridge and wine cooler that Edgestar makes. There should be something here that at least puts somebody on the right track for figuring out what they need, now that the options are presented as to the various kinds of side by side fridge that exist out there.
What Should I Look for in a Side by Side Refrigerator?
The basic criteria for a side by side refrigerator don’t change no matter exactly what kind you’re looking at.
Strong steel construction is a must, and stainless steel is even better. The interior can have some plastic, like on the shelving, but even here glass or more steel is preferred, as both are easier to get and keep clean than plastic, which can get scratched more easily and start retaining bacteria.
A side by side refrigerator should also have comfortable doors; handles that are easy to grip and pull of course, but also ones that don’t take up more space than they need to and are easy to hold open.
The interior shelving should be adjustable, able to move and removed as you will to fit various things that might not fit in the default shelving pattern.
A good compressor and overall performance is also of course a must. You should get a good temperature range, with the freezer going to at least 0 degrees Fahrenheit (if not lower) and the refrigerator being adjustable to a variety of not quite freezing temperatures.
However, the more interesting factor to consider is what kind of side by side refrigerator you even want.
Side by side refrigerators can serve a wide variety of different purposes, and at least one variety is vastly different than you might expect.
The basic kind is a simple home fridge, with a refrigerator on the right side, a freezer on the left, and usually an ice maker and filtered water dispenser attached as well. These are good, and likely what you might be looking for. Basically the only additional factor to look for here is the capacity; one home fridge is much like another, and without huge performance issues you’ll likely find little difference between two refrigerators of the same size.
Speaking of size, commercial refrigerators tend to be side by side fridges as well. The temperatures between the two sides are often independently controllable, so it can act as a larger standard fridge and freezer combo, and an extra large freezer, or an extra large refrigerator as the need arises. They tend to be quite expensive, but are a must if you want to get into any kind of professional food service job like owning a restaurant, and they make good options for people who might otherwise have huge space requirements.
Then, finally, there are more specialized options, be they a miniature fridge or some kind of beverage cooler, that serves some specific purpose not covered by the above two broader designations. Wine coolers are another one to keep an eye on, as many have a side by side design that can be adjusted between the individual sides to store different wines.
Whatever you choose, the price is going to vary wildly, with the average running well over $1000 for a new appliance, so be prepared for that potential sticker shock.
