Whenever you fire up the grill, grilling gives any food a boost in flavor and a satisfying smoky aroma and taste. It also transforms food preparation and cooking into a social event. The mesmerizing flicker of flames, dancing the food from high temps to cool temps, and the sizzle of food on hot metal make everything you grill outdoors taste better.
Whether you are a seasoned or novice grill master, impress friends and family with these tasty sizzle-worthy easy grilling ideas.
Gooey Grilled Cheese
Gather the kiddos for a melt-in-your-mouth grilled cheese that cooks in less than 6 minutes.
- Sliced bread
- Room temperature salted butter
- Sliced cheddar
Preheat the grill on high, and once it is hot, turn it down to medium. Spread butter on each slice of bread and place half of them on the grill butter side down. Place the cheese on top and add the other slice butter side up. Close the lid for about 3 minutes or until the bread is golden brown. Flip the grilled cheese to cook the other side for 3 minutes. Remove from the grill and cut in halves. Serve immediately with sliced apples and a dollop of peanut butter or Nutella for dipping.
To change things up, experiment with different cheeses like Gouda or Swiss, add some veggies like avocado or tomatoes, fresh herbs like chopped basil, or even lunch-meat.
Charred Pineapple Rings
This wonderfully nutritious fruit can be served atop a burger to add a punch of sweetness, as a spectacular ice cream sundae topping, and it is sumptuous enough to eat by itself.
- Canned pineapple rings
- Vegetable oil
Lightly brush both sides of the pineapple rings with vegetable oil. Grill over medium heat until lightly charred for 3 minutes. Gently flip the pineapple rings and grill on the other side for 3 minutes. If you want to get grill marks that look like an X, rotate the pineapple 45 degrees while grilling.
To spice it up, add a sprinkling of chili powder after grilling. For an upscale ice cream sundae topping, soak the rings in Malibu rum or sprinkle with cinnamon and brown sugar before grilling.
Maple Pork Chops
Pork chops are easy to marinate and even easier to grill. They also make a nice change from the usual barbecue fare of burgers, ribs, and hotdogs. Suppose you need a great recipe to present for potluck gatherings. These pork chops will definitely impress everybody.
- 4 boneless pork chops about 1½ inches thick
- 6 tbsp. of maple syrup
- 6 tbsp. of balsamic vinegar
- ¾ tsp. of salt
- ¾ tsp. of pepper
Whisk the ingredients together until blended. Place the pork chops in a shallow bowl and add ½ cup of the marinade. Cover and refrigerate for at least an hour. Reserve the remaining marinade for basting.
Grill the pork chops, covered over medium heat for about 17 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 145°F. Turn occasionally and baste with the reserved marinade during the last 5 minutes of cooking. Let the pork chops rest for about 3 minutes to allow the juices to redistribute throughout the meat. Serve with sauteed spinach or a crisp green salad.
Sweet and Crunchy Grilled Corn
Charred sweet and crunchy corn ears epitomize summer barbecues and family gatherings. Corn can be grilled with the husks on, but to get it from the grill to the table as quickly as possible, it is best to prepare them shucked.
- Shucked corn ears
- Kosher salt
Preheat the grill to high and add the corn, turning frequently until charred, about 10 minutes. Remove from the grill and spread with the butter, and season with salt.
For a lime-cilantro flavored butter, combine 1 stick of softened unsalted butter, 1 tablespoon of lime juice, ½ tsp. of sugar, ½ tsp. of sea salt, and ¼ cup of chopped fresh cilantro and serve with the grilled corn.
Marinated Flank Steak
This crowd-pleaser looks like it took a lot of effort to prepare, but the art of marinating the flank steak takes only requires 4 ingredients. Scoring the flank steak before marinating allows the marinade to penetrate as deeply as possible, makes it easier to chew, and ups its wow factor. To prevent the steak from buckling, make some small slits around the sides so it sears evenly.
- 2 lbs. of flank steak
- 1 cup of barbecue sauce
- ½ of red wine
- ¼ cup of lemon juice
Whisk all ingredients except the steak in a small bowl until blended. Place the steak in a shallow dish and score it on both sides. Add 1 cup of the marinade to coat the meat before covering and refrigerating for at least 4 hours. Reserve and refrigerate the remaining marinade.
Grill the steak, covered on medium heat until it reaches your preferred doneness, approximately 6-8 minutes each side. Let the meat rest for 5 minutes before slicing it thinly across the grain. Serve with the remaining marinade, potato salad, and grilled vegetables.
Grilled Summer Vegetable Platter
Grilling brings out the natural flavors of vegetables, and this marinade kicks the flavor up a notch. When entertaining, let these best of summer vegetables take center stage on your dining table.
- 1 lb. of asparagus trimmed
- 1 red onion cut into wedges
- 3 carrots halved lengthwise
- 1 yellow summer squash cut into ½-inch slices
- 1 red pepper cut into 1-inch strips
- ¼ cup of olive oil
- ½ tsp. of garlic powder
- 2 tbsp. of honey
- ⅛ teaspoon of pepper
- 4 tsp. of balsamic vinegar
- Dash of kosher salt
Using a whisk, mix all the marinade ingredients in a small bowl. Place 3 tablespoons of the marinade in a Ziploc bag and add the vegetables and coat. Marinate the vegetables for 1½ hours at room temperature.
Transfer the vegetables to a vegetable basket or a grilling grid and place them on the grill rack. Grill the vegetables, turning occasionally over medium heat for about 12 minutes or until they are crisp-tender. Remove the vegetables and arrange them on a serving platter. Drizzle the remaining marinade over the vegetables.
