Pizza rolls are easy to cook and cheap to buy, making them ideal snacks for parties, cocktail evenings, and tailgates.

You might be tempted to heat these store-bought products in your microwave so you can serve up hot food to your friends and family in just under 3 minutes, but it’s better to cook pizza rolls in your oven for the perfectly crispy exterior.

When they’re cooked in the oven, pizza rolls come out with crunchy crusts and a hot gooey filling. However, you might not know how long you’re supposed to keep these dough pouches in your oven, so here’s a guide on suitable cooking times and temperatures for your savory treats.

What Are Pizza Rolls?

Before considering how long do pizza rolls go in the oven, it’s useful to learn more about this product. A pizza roll is a type of frozen food that Jeno Paulucci invented in the 1960s. The roll is a square or circular pouch of pizza dough filled with cheese, pepperoni, or sausage-based processed mixture.

You can find large packs of pizza rolls in any major grocery store, and they’re ideal snacks for sports gatherings, social events, and playdates you’re hosting at your house. You can put these dough pockets in your microwave, and they’ll be ready to eat in less than 3 minutes, but they won’t have the same crispy texture as oven heated ones.

However, most people choose to put their pizza rolls in the oven. This cooking method ensures that the rolls cook more evenly and consistently than in the microwave, creating a tasty and satisfying result.

How Long Do Different Types of Pizza Rolls Go in the Oven?

Time

There are several types of pizza rolls, from those containing various cheese fillings to others that come with a combination of ground meat. However, because store-bought pizza rolls are pre-cooked when you get them, you won’t have to keep the meat options in the oven for any longer than you would with the cheese products.

So how long do pizza rolls go in the oven? When you’re ready to cook your pizza rolls, preheat your oven to 425°F, then place the dough balls onto a nonstick baking pan, making sure to spread them out, so they’re covering the entire base of the tray. If you can’t fit all your pizza rolls in the tray at any one time, cook them in 2 or 3 batches. You need to ensure there is adequate space between the rolls to allow the heat to warm them from all sides.

Once your oven is ready, slide the tray under the heat and close the door. If you’re cooking a pack of 20 rolls in one sitting, leave them in the oven for between 10-12 minutes. On the other hand, if you manage to fit 40 rolls on your tray and you want to cook these all at once, keep them in the oven for slightly longer, between 13-15 minutes.

If you take these rolls out of the oven after the recommended time, and you’re still not sure whether they’re heated through, use a thermometer to check the food’s internal temperature level. You want this temperature to be at 160°F or more: this signifies that the filling is evenly and adequately cooked. Heating them to this temperature also eliminates the risk of bacterial contamination.

Remember to store your uncooked pizza rolls in the freezer. There is no need to thaw your pizza rolls before cooking. You can take them out of the freezer, arrange them on a tray, and put them straight into the preheated oven.

Can You Cook Pizza Rolls on an Outdoor Grill?

big-green-and-pizza

A fun alternative to using an oven is to cook your pizza rolls on an outdoor grill. This is an excellent method for whipping up game day snacks or fixing quick appetizers for a cookout. To warm the rolls thoroughly without burning them, you need to create 2 heat zones on your grill—one set to around 400°F and the other set to the lowest setting.

Place the pizza rolls on the side with the lowest setting and grill for 5 minutes on either side with the grill lid closed to imitate the convention heat from an oven. Move them to the grill’s hot side and toast them for 1 minute on each side to get a crispy crust.

Always check the internal temp with a meat thermometer as different pizza roll brands have different fillings, which can vary the cooking time.

How Do You Make Your Own Pizza Rolls?

A person is baking

Making your own pizza rolls is relatively easy. These homemade dough swirls will also taste fresher and more flavorful than store-bought options.

Ingredients:

  • 13-17 oz. fresh pizza dough
  • 2 tbsp. butter, melted
  • ½ tsp. Italian seasoning (basil, rosemary, thyme, and oregano mix)
  • ½ tsp. garlic powder
  • 2 cups of grated mozzarella cheese
  • ⅓ cup of grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh marinara sauce
  • Parsley (for garnish)

You can use your hands or a rolling pin to flatten out your fresh pizza dough into a rectangle shape that’s between 10-12” wide by 13-16” long. Spread the marinara over the dough rectangle and add your mozzarella, spreading the cheese so that it’s spread evenly across the rolled-out dough.

Roll the dough into a log from the longest edge. Once you’ve rolled up the dough, use a kitchen knife to cut this cylindrical shape into 1-1½” slices. Preheat your oven to a temperature of 400°F.

Arrange the rolls on a nonstick baking pan, then combine the basil, rosemary, thyme, oregano, garlic powder, and melted butter in a dish. Whisk these ingredients to make a glaze, then use a pastry brush to coat the rolls lightly.

Slide the tray into the preheated oven. You’ll only need to keep them under the heat for between 10-12 minutes. When they’re cooked, take them out and arrange them on a warm plate, with a garnish of fresh parsley and grated Parmesan cheese for that extra little kick of flavor. Serve them up to your friends and family.
