The mouthwatering New York strip steak is one of the easiest steaks to prepare. I first fell in love with the New York strip when I was just 15 years old. At this time, I had started developing a taste for beef. One day my visiting uncle came home and handed me the shopping bag. I ravaged the bag looking for candies or cookies to no avail.
The long story short, he saw the frowning look on my face and realized that raw meat was not in my expectations list. Quickly, he went to the kitchen and came back with a steamy piece of steak. From that day, I learned to love the NY strip steak.
Don’t get me wrong, I had tried this piece before – I just didn’t bother to know what it was. From this moment, I became more curious. I wanted to know where to buy and how to prepare one. Now that I am a chef, let me help you learn how to prepare the best New York strip steak at home.
What Is New York Strip Steak?
The New York strip steak is a tender boneless piece of steak. In most cases, the steak is just 1/3 -1/2 inches thick, but you can get thicker options if you want. Since this steak is fairly heavy, it will require a considerably high amount of heat to cook.
The most important step in preparing your NY streak is seasoning. While most enthusiasts fancy salt and pepper, you may want to spice yours a bit more. Personally, I prefer adding a dash of cayenne, just to give it a pleasant aroma.
However, you don’t have to do the same; there are many other spicing options you should look at. Just any spicing herbs will work. I will recommend rosemary, garlic, shallots or any other spices that you fancy in your steak.
How Long Do I Cook It?
For 1/3 inch steak, each side should be cooked for around 3 minutes, then turned over and cooked for another 3 to 5 minutes at 135 °F. This means you may be able to prepare a huge meal, in just a short period of time!
How Long Should A New York Strip Rest?
If you want to attain the best NY strip steak, leave the steak on the heat for at least half of the cooking time, then give it sufficient time to rest before serving.
New York Strip Steak

- 2 packaged NY strip steaks
- Sea salt or coarse kosher
- ground black paper- preferably coarse
- 4 tablespoons of softened salted butter
- 1 teaspoon of salsa Perrins (Worcestershire sauce)
- 2 cloves of crushed garlic
- 1 teaspoon of fresh thyme leaves
- Garlic/thyme compound butter- optional
Here is a step by step guide on how to prepare your New York strip steak
Step 1: Prepare your Steak
30 minutes to grilling time, remove your steak from the refrigerator and season both sides of each steak with coarse salt. Thereafter, keep the seasoned steaks under room temperature.
Preheat your grill to about 900 °F. Although you may not be able to measure the temperature, the best way to ensure that you achieve the desired temperature is by heating the grills until they start turning red.
Step 2: Prepare compound butter for serving
In a small bowl, combine all the ingredients for making the compound butter. Scoop the compound butter with a spoon and place a spoonful directly on the serving dish. Ideally, you should place your butter close to where you will put your steak.
Set aside the remaining butter to be added on the top of the steak.
To make your work easier, always prepare your butter before placing the steak on the grills.
Once you remove your steak from the grills, place it on top of the set butter.
Step 3: Grill Your NY Strip Steaks
Now, put your cut directly on the preheated grill grates. If you are preparing a medium ( 1/2 inch – 1/3 inch ) steak, cook for 3 minutes then rotate your grill forty-five degrees and cook for another 3 – 4 minutes.
As you cook, observe your steak keenly, since you may be required to adjust your cooking time to attain the ideal internal doneness.
If you are preparing a rare steak, cook to about 125 °F, for medium rare cook to about 135 °F and for medium, cook to about 145 °F. For medium well and well done steak, you should aim to cook to about 160 °F.
Step 4: Serve Your NY Strip Steak
After just 6 to 10 minutes of cooking, your NY strip steak should be ready for serving. Remove it from the heat and set it on the compound butter platter. Thereafter, allow the steak rest for about 10 minutes, then slice and sprinkle the coarse pepper. You can now add the remaining compound butter on top and serve or you may take it without adding any butter.
It’s as simple as that!
Each serving of the NY strip steak should contain about 715 Kcal, 1g carbohydrates, 47 g proteins, 57 g fats, 214 mg cholesterol, 347mg sodium, 731mg magnesium, 1 g fiber, and 64 mg calcium.
